Laurel Manor House Bed & Breakfast

Built in 1888 and originally known as the Phelps House, this Victorian home is a contributing structure recognized by the City of Laurel Historic District Commission (HDC). After years of deferred maintenance, the home was purchased by new owners committed to restoring its historic charm and converting it into a bed and breakfast.

The homeowners engaged HD Squared Architects to document existing conditions and reconfigure the layout to support modern hospitality needs. The design preserved character-defining features while improving energy performance, comfort, and building systems.

HD Squared’s scope included the creation of three guest suites, a kitchen expansion to serve visitors, and the conversion of the attic into a private residence for the owners. All materials were selected for durability, sustainability, and sensitivity to the home’s architectural heritage.

Today, Laurel Manor House is described as “the only authentic B&B in Laurel, Maryland,” offering “19th-century charm with 21st-century comfort” (TripAdvisor). The project received a Community Choice Award from Preservation Maryland in 2019.
