Elevated Green Living

Cheverly Sustainable Home Renovation

This Cheverly home renovation transformed a dated 1980s split-level into a healthy, resilient, and beautifully functional space for a family of five. Located in Prince George’s County, MD near Washington, D.C., the home now blends modern comfort with sustainability, earning Gold Certification through the National Green Building Standard (NGBS).

The Main Challenges

The original split-level layout was chopped up into small, disconnected rooms that no longer met the needs of a growing family. The house lacked a primary suite, had an inconvenient laundry room location, and featured dated finishes and limited gathering space.

Even more critically, the building envelope was failing; air leakage, poor insulation, and an outdated HVAC system made the home uncomfortable and energy-inefficient.

HD Squared’s Design Approach

A new second-floor addition created a serene primary suite with a spa-like bath, a private home office, and a sitting balcony overlooking the cul-de-sac—a favorite new feature for the parents. The addition also formed a sheltered front entry, improving curb appeal and daily function.

On the main level, three interior walls were removed to create a bright, open flow between the kitchen, dining, and living areas. The former kitchen was repurposed as a dining room, while a relocated fireplace brought balance and warmth to the heart of the home.

Upstairs, three children’s bedrooms now share a redesigned hall bath with a double vanity and separated wet zone, while the laundry was conveniently relocated to this floor.

Sustainability at the Core

Every design decision was guided by performance and resilience. An energy audit informed upgrades including:

  • Comprehensive air sealing and new insulation

  • High-performance windows and sheathing

  • Zoned heat pump system and duct sealing

  • Energy Star fixtures and appliances

The home is now fully electric, eliminating fossil fuel use and lowering long-term operating costs.

Materials were chosen for health and durability: low-VOC finishes, sustainably sourced products, and reclaimed materials. Deconstruction and salvage efforts kept usable elements out of landfills while supporting local workforce development.

I just started working with Melanie. I, as a builder, found her plans easy to work with. Her ideas were very creative and practical with a keen eye on both the budget and the environment. I look forward to our future endeavors. I have recommended her to my clients and will continue to do so.
