Historic Burtis Project

The Burtis House is the last historic 19th Century waterman’s cottage left at the Annapolis City Dock waterfront. Sitting just 3 feet above sea level, the house has long been a victim of repeated flooding in the downtown area. Years of flood waters have damaged the interior and eroded the structural integrity of the first level.

HD Squared Architects was awarded the “Phase 1 – Stabilization of Burtis House” as a portion of the larger City Dock Resiliency Project. Working alongside Preservation Maryland and the City of Annapolis, Phase 1 includes designing and facilitating the restoration of the buildings’ historic integrity, elevating the structure +/- 4.5’ above its current height, and providing a new pier and beam foundation to prevent future flooding.

When the City Dock Resiliency Project is complete, the Burtis House will become part of a grand revitalization of the Annapolis City Dock area. The revived building will connect to new promenades and city park spaces.

I just started working with Melanie. I, as a builder, found her plans easy to work with. Her ideas were very creative and practical with a keen eye on both the budget and the environment. I look forward to our future endeavors. I have recommended her to my clients and will continue to do so.
