Burtis House Phase 2 – Annapolis City Dock Maritime Welcome Center

Phase 2 of the historic Burtis House restoration is a key component of the larger Annapolis City Dock Maritime Welcome Center project. This comprehensive municipal initiative encompasses the complete historic restoration of the Burtis House, currently in the permitting phase, alongside construction of the new Maritime Welcome Center addition. HD Squared Architects serves as a consultant to BCT Design Group within the broader Annapolis Mobility & Resilience Partners collaboration.

The project requires approval from the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT) for exterior restoration work, which must comply with MHT easement guidelines and restrictions. The interior spaces, previously remodeled multiple times by former owners, are not subject to MHT easement requirements.

Upon completion, the Burtis House will accommodate a cultural center on the main level and offices with supporting spaces for the Annapolis Harbor Master on the second level. The historic structure will connect to the new addition through a glass “hyphen” designed to preserve the building’s historic integrity. This design approach has received preliminary MHT approval.
